The Power of Myth in Modern Branding
Updated: Aug 30
The strongest brands rarely compete on functionality alone.
Whether in sport, fashion, hospitality, or luxury, the brands that create lasting loyalty often tap into something deeper than the products or services they provide. They create stories, symbols, and shared beliefs that transform ordinary experiences into something people want to be part of.
This principle sat at the heart of our work with Tidal Weightlifting.

Based in Hong Kong, Tidal Weightlifting specialises in Olympic weightlifting, a discipline built around technical mastery, discipline, and the pursuit of strength. While the gym offered expert coaching and a dedicated training environment, the opportunity extended beyond fitness itself. The challenge was to create a brand that reflected the emotional and psychological journey of becoming stronger.
Rather than focusing solely on barbells, competition, or athletic performance, we explored the role mythology has played throughout human history.
For thousands of years, societies have used stories of gods, heroes, and legendary figures to embody qualities they admired. Strength, resilience, courage, and determination were often represented through powerful archetypes that inspired people to push beyond perceived limitations.
This insight became the foundation of the brand.

Drawing inspiration from Greek and Roman mythology, we developed a visual and narrative system centred around Poseidon, the God of the Sea. Traditionally depicted wielding a trident and commanding the power of the oceans, Poseidon became a symbol of force, movement, and relentless energy. Reimagined through the lens of Olympic weightlifting, the trident was replaced with a loaded barbell, creating a contemporary icon that connected ancient mythology with modern performance.
The goal was not simply to create a memorable logo. It was to establish a symbol capable of representing the values at the core of the community itself.
The resulting identity extended across the gym environment, digital platforms, merchandise, and marketing materials, creating a cohesive experience that reinforced the same message at every touchpoint. Members were not simply attending a gym. They were becoming part of a culture built around strength, discipline, and personal transformation.

The project reinforced an idea we continue to see across industries.
People are naturally drawn to stories that help them understand who they are and who they aspire to become. The most effective brands recognise this and build identities that communicate meaning rather than features alone.
For Tidal Weightlifting, mythology became more than a creative theme. It became a framework for community, aspiration, and shared identity.
Because the strongest brands do more than describe what people do.
They remind people of what they are capable of becoming.
